Add an automation to a step

Open any step in a workflow and add an automation. Choose the workflow that should start when this step is completed — it can live in your department or another one in your organization.

Configure the new run

Set the run title, resolve roles to specific people, choose who's added as a participant, apply tags, and prefill step data and workflow fields — all defaults for every run this automation starts.

Complete the step

The next time someone completes that step in a run, Manifestly starts the target workflow automatically — titled, assigned, tagged, and prefilled — and records it in the run's activity.

Decide exactly how the new run starts

An automation isn't just “start that workflow.” You define the defaults every triggered run inherits, so it opens ready to work instead of half-built.

  • Title the run — with variables so each one is named from the run that triggered it.
  • Resolve roles to people so assignments land on the right person from the start.
  • Add participants — everyone from the originating run, the person who completed the step, or a specific list you pick.
  • Apply tags to keep triggered runs organized and reportable.
  • Prefill data into step fields and workflow fields so nothing has to be re-entered.

Carry the details forward, no retyping

The run title and prefilled fields accept variables, so each triggered run is stamped with real data from the run that started it. Insert a token and Manifestly resolves it at the moment the new run begins.

Pull a value someone entered on the source run, a workflow field, a shared global variable your admins manage, or a built-in system token — and drop it straight into the new run's title or fields.

Completing a specific step. You add an automation to a step in the source workflow; whenever someone completes that step in a run, Manifestly automatically starts a run of the target workflow you chose.

The run title (with variables), how roles resolve to specific people, who's added as a participant, tags to apply, and prefilled values for step data and workflow fields. Those become the defaults for every run the automation starts.

Yes. The title and prefilled fields accept variables — system variables, admin-managed global variables, and data-collection values entered on the originating run — so the new run opens stamped with real details instead of blanks.

Your choice: everyone who participated in the originating run, just the person who completed the triggering step, a specific list of people you pick, or any combination.

Yes, as long as both belong to the same organization. To configure a cross-department trigger you must be an admin in both the source and target departments. Triggering a workflow in a different organization is never permitted.

Any active, recurring workflow you can administer — including ones in other departments of your organization. Archived or inactive workflows can't be targets.
